A PFD or Personal Flotation Device has been tested and approved by agencies that address the safety of boat operators and crews. To meet the requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard, all boats regardless of length must have the proper type and number of PFDs aboard. Regulations require boats to carry one PFD rated Type I, II, III, or Type V to fit each person aboard. Check the rating of the PFD to help determine the type best suited for your boating activity.
In addition, boats 16 feet and over must have one Type IV PFD (throwable device). A PFD is either made of highly buoyant materials or can inflate (both automatically or manually) with an armed inflation mechanism. Look here for a variety of the buoyant Life Jackets and Life Vests. Most are foam-filled and rated Type I, Type II or Type III. We also stock Throwable Cushions approved for use as Type IV PFDs.
